Do not blog about work.

No matter how benign you think your post may be, The Man may still take exception.

Once again: Do not blog about work.

I'll second that. Most companies would prefer that their PR department be the only one who speaks to public media about them. And by now, almost everyone considers the Internet to be a public medium.

Not necessarily saying that I agree with it. But if you post anything about your employers in a public forum, they'll consider it the equivalent of publishing a newspaper article, and may become very upset at that.

All in favor say "aye."

My last job in TO was at a certain G&L bi-weekly. The day my contract was terminated, 2 other people were fired for reasons pertaining to their diaryland sites. Needless to say, I made it a point to learn from their mistake.

I amazes me what people will put on their website, right alongside their name. Doesn't anyone ever Google themselves? Chances are, your (prospective) employers are.

I have this theory that 5-10 years from now, it will be common practice for employers to inform people that they didn't get a job because of "that thing" they wrote about on their blog 6 years ago.

Been there, done that, have the t-shirt.

Actually, I've found that companies are more than willing to show you the door if you do as much as imply criticism - on a blog, to a co-worker, or in a very open and straightforward way to your immediate supervisor. They don't want employees, they want sheep.

Hm. On second thought, I don't think I'll attach my full name to this post! ;-)
