Summer is here, which means Mr. Oscillating-Fan-Which-Doesn't-Oscillate-Quite-Fully-Anymore is getting a workout. In case you hadn't guessed, The Hovel does not have air conditioning.

Meanwhile, Mr. "Web Usability Guru" Jakob Nielsen weighs in with his two cents on information foraging.

After suffering through last summers awful heat wave, we went out and bought a window air conditioner this year with money we didn't have LOL Thank goodness though, I couldn't stand another summer like that. I feel your pain Jen.

I feel nothing but too cold a/c -- 24/7. Come live here, Jen. It's included in the rent.

Canadian Tire, (and some Canadian Tire money), can chill the hovel out.

If you don't want to splash out for an air conditioner, you can at least get some relief by improving the circulation in your place.

Get two 24" box fans, which any decent store should have for about $12 each. (Sorry, I can't translate that into metric or Canadian Tire money.) Put one in your bedroom window, blowing in. Then find another window that's more or less facing the first one, and put the other fan in there, blowing out. This does wonders to suck cool air into the rooms at might, and to force out warm, stagnant air during the day.

If your home's layout is more up/down than across, put a powerful fan in one of the top floor windows, blowing out. This will aid the natural chimney effect and keep hot air moving up and out.

Physics-geek climate control. Worked for me during my too-cheap-for-AC years.
